My goal is to lead the team to victory every time I step on the mound. I am so happy that it seems to have worked out so far.”스포츠토토
KT Wiz foreign pitcher William Cuevas showed off the ace’s majesty properly.
Cuevas won his 8th win of the season in an away game against Lotte held at Sajik Stadium on the 27th. He defended the mound until the 8th inning and showed off his powerful pitch, giving only 1 run.
On this day, Cuevas’ highest speed was recorded up to 149 km, and he effectively used his main weapons such as slider, changeup, two-seam fastball, and cut fastball.
Cuevas passed the mound to Kim Jae-yoon, a special firefighter, in the 9th inning, leading 2-1. KT defeated Lotte 2-1 and swept 3 consecutive weekend games.
Manager Lee Kang-cheol said, “Every time Cuevas starts, he continues to show good pitching. He also had a good relationship with catcher Seong-Woo Jang.”
Cuevas, who met with reporters after the game, said, “My goal is to lead the team to victory every time I step on the mound. I am so happy that it seems to have worked out so far,” he said of his victory.
He continued, “(After leaving KT) I learned a lot while playing for the Mexican League and LA Dodgers. Thanks to that, I think he is showing good form this season.”
In particular, he said, “I learned a lot about moving the lower body, and I learned how to throw a strong ball without much effort on the mound. So he seems to lead to good performance,” he explained.
Wes Benjamin and his colleagues were preparing to pour ice water on Cuevas during a broadcast interview. Quick-witted Cuevas quickly evaded it, and interpreter Lee Yeon-joon took over. In response, Cuevas smiled, saying, “I already noticed and signaled to Benjamin to spray the interpreter, not me.”
Cuevas was included in the recruitment candidates of some clubs that need reinforcement of foreign pitchers, but chose to return to KT.
He said, “When I was playing in the United States, scouts from other clubs came, but KT is like a family to me. (KT) has a lot of players that I really like and I know that the club likes me so much, so I am so happy to be back here.”
Cuevas, who has won 5 wins this month alone, is a worthy candidate for the KBO MVP for August. In response, he did not hide his anticipation, saying, “I’m not thinking about it, but I think I’ll be very happy when I receive it.”
